Coal Carbonization

A coke oven battery   means a group of ovens “slots” connected by common walls ,normally, a coke battery comprises a large number of ovens ,typically a set from 60 to 90 per battery ,grouped in sections of 15 to 20  all where coal undergoes destructive distillation to produce coke A coke oven battery includes  by-product and non-recovery processes.

By Products  a-side from making coke .the main focus was to capture saleable products from coal distillation. Some to include ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate , fertlizser, explosives , light oils , heat for the steel mills ,gases, cosmetics, and with the orginal development of asprin. 

Machinery  The chargining car located on top of the ovens and charging the ovens through port holes with coal. The Ram Beam  a 60 ft structural steel beam . with teeth to suit a pinoin , the beam is for use to push the new coke, through coke guides to a waiting quenching car. to be sprayed with water.

To date there are 17 coke maufacturing facilities in the United States that may be categorized based on wheather or not they are integrated with a large steelmaking operation. They may also be categorized based on wheather they incorporate a recovery process for extracting chemicals for reuse or resale .

Industrial Decarbonization  US Steel  may apply for funding for industrial decarbonization projects , its aim is to find ways to make energy intensive industries like steelmaking , aluminum, and concrete contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. US Steel is also for pennsylvania to apply for separate funding for a regionial hydrogen hub, to take, and convert coal , or natural gas to hydrogen.
