What is volume? Volume is a measure of quantity. We know that a pint of beer occupies twice the volume of half a pint – similarly, a liter will occupy twice the volume of half a liter. In other words, volume is the amount of space a body occupies.
Units of volume. In Coal Preparation, just as in units of weight, we use metric units of volume. The standard unit of volume is the cubic meter, but it is too big a unit of volume to use for many purposes (although we do quote pump capacities in cubic meters per hour, in the metric system). Instead we use the cubic centimeter or the milliliter: for all practical purposes these have the same volume, and we usually use the cubic centimeter when we are talking about solid material and the milliliter when talking about liquids.
‘Milli’ in front of a metric units means “one thousandth of.”
