Bituminous

Coal Stage of coal maturity which covers most American coals; they range from high volatile low rank types with poor coking qualities, to medium and low volatile prime coking coals. Bituminous coals are intermediate between brown coal (lignite) and anthracite; they are black, and emit smoke on being burned.
